Speedo League Round 2

Reading "A" team gala

Reading's two teams in the National Speedo League came up with identical results on Saturday - a pair of fourth places on identical points which ensured a comfortable mid-table finish for both come the league's final round in December.

Reading A sit eighth out of 18 teams in the South's top division, with Reading B seventh out of 18 in Division II (West).

The men's team took the eye for Reading A at Bracknell with eight wins and four second spots in the 25 heats.

Matt Sandell kicked things off brilliantly with a 100 IM win just 0.04 over the minute mark, and was then joined by York Kloeppel, Chris Ferguson and Dan Hester for an open medley relay second place.

Not to be outdone by the seniors, youngsters Barnaby Kempster (11) and Callum Willcox (13) then contributed big points via a second in the 50 back and a 100 breaststroke win respectively. Willcox smashed his PB in 1.17.69, almost 3 seconds quicker than the swim which placed him second in his year in round one at Guildford.

Adam Barrett, another making rapid strides in Graeme Thomas's top squad, placed third in the 14/15 100m back before Hester's 58.42 won the open 100 fly.

Chris Boyce (12/13 100m back winner in 1.09.26) and Chris Ferguson (open fly in 1.01.64) racked up more maximum points.

Sandell was within a whisker of making it three heat wins in a row but was just touched out in the open 100 back, followed by a third for Luca Poli in the youngest age group's 50 breaststroke.

Ferguson reinforced his enormous potential with a 100 free age group win in 56.92, and York Kloeppel produced Reading's second huge breaststroke PB of the night as runner-up in 1.09.70 - like Willcox, almost 3 seconds ahead of his time in round one.

With Willcox swimming up an age-group to join Barrett, Alex Macarthur and Ferguson, the 14/15 boys secured an excellent medley relay third place. This set the stage for a stunning finale as Reading's strongest team for years in the six-leg open freestyle relay won by a huge margin.

Reading welcomed back one of its best ever freestylers in Craig Woodward, who swam a very respectable 25.82 alongside Sandell, Hester, Garry Dixon, Kloeppel - another big PB - and Ferguson.

The girls had it much tougher, with Zoe Hester's age group backstroke second place a highlight. Kristina Paige picked up third in the 14/15 100 fly, as did Frankie Wilkins in the same event one age group down.

Best women's swim of the night, though, came from Reading Masters' world-ranked Carole Eyles, with an excellent 1.19.27 to place third in the 100 breaststroke against girls in much tougher training. Eyles also swam a very respectable 29.50 in the freestyle relay closing the programme.
