League Round 1 B Team Report The Reading Evening Post sponsored Reading Swimming Club’s "B" team swam at Waterlooville in the first round of the Speedo League competition after their promotion to Division 1. The step up to this new level was a reward for all the hard work done last season, and the meet pitched them against "A" teams from Bracknell, Eastleigh, Winchester, Newbury and Chesham.
For many of Reading’s younger inexperienced swimmers it was their first competition in a league team and they should be proud of the way they performed.
This was Reading’s most successful age group with Leanne Haas producing excellent swims in both the butterfly and breaststroke events, a second place in the fly recording a time of 1.10.86, and in the breaststroke a time of 1.22.13. Louisa Herring gained good points in the backstroke with a second placing in a time of 1.14.88. Good swims were also recorded by Beth Ayerst in the freestyle and also by Bryan Wibberley in the backstroke. The girls' medley team of Louisa Herring, Charlotte Thompson, Leanne Haas and Beth Ayerst took third spot in a closely fought race.
Louise Gillatt swam well in the freestyle to record a 1.08.80, Markus Orgill held on to good form in the fly for a time of 1.13.36. Chris Dunkley swam in the freestyle and backstroke events, posting times of 1.01.67 and 1.12.80 respectively.
Eleanor Cawthorne produced a superb swim in a personal best time of 1.29.72 for a five second improvement on butterfly. In the breaststroke, Jason Passmore recorded a four second personal best time of 1.35.42. Rebecca Lowe also performed well in this event, recording a time of 1.30.03. Conor Sandell was another swimmer with a personal best time, 1.12.00 in the freestyle.
Swimmers in this age group found the opposition very strong, but as they gain more experience, this coupled with the great technique that they demonstrated stands them in good stead for future rounds.
Bracknell 261, Eastleigh 169, Winchester 167, Newbury 164, Chesham 161, Reading B 89
