Thirteen-year-olds Naomi Herring and Vanessa Wood starred as Reading swimmers beat a familiar path to Ealing’s Gurnell pool for the West London club’s latest graded meet.

Herring’s seven swims yielded one "speeding ticket" for swimming too fast for the graded limit and six medals. Three of these were gold as she took both the 100m and 200m backstroke in 1:23.48 and 2:56.72, and after being ticketed in the 100m free she won the 200 in 2:38.67.

Herring placed second in her 100 fly, third in her 100 breaststroke and the pair’s 200 IM finish was too close to call from the gallery, with her 3:01.60 pipping third-placed Wood to the silver by just 0.08.

Wood swam eight events, finished no lower than fifth and came home with six medals. Top performance was a 200m backstroke gold in 2:56.72 in the demanding 50-metre pool, with freestyle silvers over both 100 and 200 metres and bronze in her 100m fly and 200m breaststroke to go with her 200 IM bronze.

Charlotte Nichols was Reading’s fastest medley swimmer, beating the three-minute barrier and claiming a bronze in her year in 2:57.15.

Among the top boys’ swims in various age groups, James Tichband won silver in his 200 free and Markus Orgill in his 100 fly, while Ollie Burgoyne took bronze in both his 200 free and 100 breaststroke.

Matt Zadrozny’s best performances came in two fourth spots over 200 metres, the breaststroke and IM, and further speeding ticket swims included Rachael Mills in her 50 free and brother David in his 200 IM.
